ACOUSTICS

Acoustics (from the Greek word akouo – to hear) is the science related to sounds and noises, i.e. anything that can be perceived by the human ear.
Perception, however, is a very complex process, which not only involves mechanical phenomena, and therefore easily reproducible in laboratory, but also the emotional sphere, tied to our personal stories, as well as to the ability to "feel" what is heard beyond.
Acoustics studies the sound mechanical aspects, and it’s important to remember that only through the "why" and "how” methods, we can have a greater awareness of the world around us.
The study of acoustics, as well as a great mental exercise, helps us in comprehending the causality connection between a number of external circumstances and their effect on our hearing.
If such a study is normally really important for all students, it is even more for blind people ones, which, by necessity, must rely on hearing sense more than the others.
Based on this principle was made a short handbook that will help blind students from one side to discover the music "alphabet ", on the other, to reveal some important similarities between certain visual phenomena and the corresponding acoustic manifestations.
It is through the study of acoustics the blind people, even blind from birth, may give a new meaning to terms such as " colour", " chromatic contrast ", "shade “, and so on, or to some typically visual phenomena as the perspective effect.
Not a cryptic text, but something that can offer the possibility to become aware of the important correlations between the two main distance senses, sight and hearing, as well as discovering related points of contact and differences.
As example, talking about common points, we could quote the ability of the two senses of giving space and time directions (distance, source, extent, sequence and simultaneity, order and proportions), while for the differences, just to mention the ability to hear sounds and noises from all directions, unlike view, whose perceptual field just extends for about 180 °.

Finally, if one takes into account that, thanks to acoustic sensations in combination with tactile and anemestesic ones (the perception of the wind), blind people can detect many types of obstacles (although not all), the study of acoustics becomes even more important not only for the scientific thought development, but also for the achievement of a greater degree of autonomy, fundamental assumption for a psychological individuality.
